In addition to learning about the archeology of the area, students will immerse themselves in the region’s exceedingly rich culture and history. With time in both the City of Oaxaca and the beach town of Puerto Escondido, students will experience the geographic diversity of the state of Oaxaca.

Arrival to Oaxaca

Introduction to Oaxaca. Orientation, City walk, Welcome Dinner

Day 3

Foragers, farmers, early social complexity. Potting community visit San Bartolo Coyotepec

Day 4

Origins of urbanism in Oaxaca. San José Mogote archaeological site and museum

Day 5

Monte Albán and early urbanism. Mountaintop city of Monte Albán

Day 6

Classic period culture and the collapse. Lambityeco archaeological site and Tulé tree

Day 7

Oaxaca postclassic. Mitla and Yagul archaeological sites 

Day 8

The Spanish Entrada. Ex-Convento de Cuilapam & Oaxaca Regional Museum

Day 9

Free day

Day 10

Nochixtlán and Teposcolula valleys, lecture on site

Day 11

Travel to Puerto Escondido

Chatino and Río Viejo. Río Verde Archaeological Project
